How to use

R4 NDSI user notice: Insert Micro sd card (TF card) into the R4I GOLD or R4-GOLD card according the the guide of the following picture.

1.Download Kernel and Game
By using TF card reader, connect the TF card with computer, open the memu.
a. Upload game kernel: Copy the R4.DAT file to your TF card.
b. Upload video kernel: Copy the Moonshl2 to your TF card.
c. Upload DIY Interface function: Copy the R4IMenu to your TF card .

2.Copy games
By using TF card reader, connect the TF card with computer, copy the downloaded games to TF card. (If needed, corresponding menu can be set up)

3.Main menu operation
Make sure microSD card with Kernel is inserted in R4I NDSI, then insert R4 NDSI in NDS SLOT-1 port, start the machine and enter main menu interface. By pressing buttons (right and left) or touching screens, you may choose the games or media function, press A to the relative function.

4.Game operation menu
Choosing game function in Main Menu to enter Game interface, return to main menu by pressing R.
In Game Interface, press L to adjust 4-level brightness.
In Game Interface, its on top screen showing game messages including four items: game, cheat, setting and ROM, while its on bottom screen showing game name, file size and current game category. Press UP and DOWN to check current page easily, and press LEFT and RIGHT to turn over the page, on the top line of bottom screen, it is showed with current file and total file qties, while on bottom line of the bottom screen the path of the category.
Press X or B, enter four items in the top screens: game, cheat, setting and ROM.
Enter cheat item, its showed in the bottom screee Current game name, cheat function setting, cheat function switch, timely reminding window and file saving. Touch Cheat off/Cheat on to run the cheat function, and touch file saving to save the file.
Enter Setting item, it's showed in the bottom screen there languages: English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese, touch file saving to save the relevant file.
Enter ROM item, its showed in the top bottom screen cheat, DMA, software start functions, touch the relevant file to save the file. When the Soft-Reset function is ON during game, L+R+A+B+X+Y kdy combination can be pressed to return R4-II menu.. Dont save during soft reset, otherwise archive lost will be led. It is recommended to return game main menu and then soft reset. If Soft-Reset can not be operated or the Game is impacted, please turn off the soft-reset function.

5.Game Operation
Choose your expected game in the game menu, press A or touch the screen to play games. In the first operation, it will remind file is effected
The updated date of the files will be automatically revised while playing the games each time, the updated files could be easily found by checking the latest date revision.
The names of the files are the same as which of the games, expanded name is SAV. Which can be copied to computer at any moment.

6.Cheat Operation
Choose the games, enter Cheat by pressing B or X.
Game Title is showed in the top screen, while it shows in the bottom screen reminding window, Cheat off/Cheat on, file saving, current Cheat items. Choose your expected Cheat item by pressing up and down, and open or close the item by pressing A or touching the screen. Touch Cheat on/Cheat off to operate the Cheat, and touch the screen to save the file.
While the Cheat is running, you may choose the cheat code one by one by pressing up and down, and close the cheat code by pressing A. Under Cheat Code Category, press A to open/close the category. You can delete the cheat.dat file in R4IMenu category if the cheat function is not required.
Cheat database updates: Download the newest cheat database and copy usrcheat.dat file to R4IMenu category.

7.Skin change method
Four files are alternative in the R4IMenu/Skin category: they are TScreen.bmp, BottomInit.bmp, TScreen.bmp and BottomScreen.bmp, which are the operation interface of R4, content in the pictures can be changed at random.

Notice: The above files names can not be changed, picture must be in .bmp format with 8 or 24 digits, picture size must be of 256*192 pixel.
Once your favourite picture is ready, copy the complete category TF card R4IMenu/ skin to TF category.

Question:

Answer

Please NDS game system date can be updated to the current date.

The file system of the SD card might be problem,
First copy all the contain of the SD card to the computer for backup,
Second reformatting the SD card, for SD card more than 1GB please format to FAT32. Last copy back the backup files to the SD card again.

5.An error message appears whenever restart saying that the file name of a game is too long.
There is a maximum limit of the full path name in the kernel (max 80 chars). Please reduce the filename, it will work again.

6.How to change the language setting of the R4i?
To change prefer language, press “X, B” to select the “language” setting button which locate at the top screen (third icon from the top). User also can configure the “language.ini” locate at the R4iMenu folder to configure the preference language manually.

7.When start it up with a download game, the game cannot play.
That is due to the anti‐flash card routine of the new games. Download the latest version of the R4i kernel which provides the solution for the game, in the meanwhile temporary can use the patch version of the ROM (if available in the web). Report the name of problem game to the R4i‐GOLD support team.

8.How to customize or change R4i skin/themes?
Can download customize skin from the official web site www.r4igold.cn.
To create the own customize skins/themes; please refer to the document “ English kernel download instruction” which can be found at the official web site. For the R4i v1.08b onward the kernel will able to support multiple skins, user can install maximum up to 8 skins/themes to the kernel

9.If the games list is pretty large, and only 4 games at a time as I scroll thru them, and each has its own icon. It takes forever to scroll thru the list. Is there a way to just view text?
There is a “zoom in/out” icon at the left bottom corner of the bottom/touch screen. Press it to switch to the text view mode. Also can use the left/right button the scroll the list by page mode, each page contain 4 games。

10.How to return back to the firmware/kernel during playing game?
Press at the keys (left + right + up + down + X + Y + B + A + L + R) during playing games。

11.How to enable game cheating?
First highlight the NDS ROM you want to apply the cheats to. Second press the B button to go into the cheats options menu and checkmark each cheat you want to enable.

Third turn the cheats on for that ROM by clicking the cheat on/off button. Last you'll notice the wrench icon will be yellow which indicates cheats are on. You have to press “x” or “B” to view the cheats and to turn it on don’t forget to press the save button when the cheat is on the grey key turns gold Gold= ON Gray= OFF Please update the “usrcheat.dat” from the ‐GOLD official web site www.r4igold.cn to support cheat function of new games.

12.How to return back to the firmware/kernel from Moonshell (multimedia player)?
Press “start” button, and select the “Return to the firmware” from the menu.

13.Stuck at the “MENU” screen after loading DSi.
No firmware or wrong firmware was installed in the SD card. Please refer to the instruction to install R4i‐GOLD to the SD card. The instruction can be found at the R4i‐GOLD official web site www.r4igold.cn.

14.Stuck at the “NO CARD” screen after loading DSi.
SD Card not found. Please check whether SD card was insert properly or not into the flash card. Otherwise SD card could be fault.

15.Stuck at the “LOADING” screen after loading DSi
Make sure using the official firmware from the R4i‐GOLD official web site www.r4igold.cn Or the flash card is not “R4I‐GOLD or R4‐GOLD”.

Installation Guide Step By Step

STEP1: Preparing your PC

Install winrar. WinRar is a FREE tool that allows you to extract ZIP and RAR files.

NOTE: You only need to download and install WinRAR once for your PC, so only complete this step if you have never done this for the PC you are working on!

1) Click on this link to go to the WinRAR site
2) Choose to download either the 32bit or the 64bit version shown in the image below. The version you choose should match that of your operating system. So if you have installed a 32bit version of windows then you will need the 32bit version of winrar. If you have no idea what version of windows you have then read this to find out: How do I find out what version of windows I have?

3) Once the download is finished go to your desktop where you saved it. Double click the file to start installing WinRar.

That's it WinRAR is now installed. You do not need to learn how to use it. Basically the program is now built into windows and new options will be available to extract RAR and ZIP files when you press the right mouse button on them. You will see this later when you have downloaded your DS card software and need to extract it.

STEP2: Formatting your Micro SD

It is quite important that your micro sd card that you intend to use in your DS card is formatted properly. If you are using a brand new card then you can skip this step but if you have had problems with the card then just to rule out formatting issues follow these steps.
This is also a useful step if you have a working DS card but the files take ages to load.

Before copying the driver/kernel to the microSD Memory Card, please format your microSD on your PC. This is to remove all the data on the memory card.
    a)  After inserting the microSD into the card reader, go to My Computer.
    b)  Right click the driver representing the microSD memory card.
    c)  Choose Format

    d)  Click Start to format the memory card

Using Panasonic Memory Card Format Software

Note:
If your memory cards have capacity bigger than 32GB, please download the SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Cards Format Software.
If your memory cards have capacity equal or smaller than 32GB, please download the SD/SDHC Memory Cards Format Software.

1. Insert SD/SDHC Memory Card into reader/writer.
2. Click on [Start], point to [All Programs] -> [Panasonic] -> [SD Formatter VX.X], and click on [SD Formatter VX.X].
   “X.X” means the version number of SD Memory Card Formatting Software.
   If “User Account Control” window is displayed on the screen, please click on [Arrow].
3. The main window is displayed on the screen.
4. Select the target drive by drive list and check SD/SDHC Memory Card size.
5. Click on [Format].
6. After clicking on it, confirmation window is displayed on the screen. Here, if [OK] is clicked, this software executes the format operation. On the contrary, if [Cancel] is clicked, this software cancels the format operation and returns to the main window.
7. The following status window is displayed on the screen during the format operation.
   Note: [Cancel] on this window is available only if either “FULL (Erase ON)” or “FULL (Erase OFF)” is selected as format type option. If “QUICK” is selected as format type option, this button is not available.
8. After the format operation completion, click [OK] and remove the Memory Card from your PC.
9. Reinsert the memory card to the PC to start using the memory card.

Using Mac Memory Card Format Tool

1. Plug your memory card reader into a USB port on your Mac. Insert the microSD / microSDHC card into the memory card reader's microSD / microSDHC slot, and the microSD / microSDHC card will mount on your Mac desktop.
2. In an open Finder window, single-click "Applications" in the Side-Bar and scroll down to find the Utilities folder. Find Disk Utility in the Utilities folder and double-click the "Disk Utility" application to launch it.
3. In the opened Disk Utility application, single-click to select the microSD / microSDHC card in the left-hand Drives column. Then, single-click to select the "Erase" button in the top row of radio buttons. Select the format MS-DOS (FAT) to format the microSD / microSDHC card on the "Volume Format" pop-up button.  When you have finished selecting the formatting options, click "Erase."
4. A new dialogue box will pop up in "Disk Utility," asking if you are sure you wish to erase the microSD / microSDHC card. Caution: Erasing the microSD / microSDHC card will permanently erase any files. Make sure you have backed up any file you wish to keep. To continue with the formatting process, click "Erase."
5. Once the microSD / microSDHC card has been erased, it will mount on your Mac desktop just as any other removable drive.

 STEP3: Downloading the RIGHT Software

Its is crucial to use the CORRECT software for your DS card. There are so many clones and variations of the same cards out there and its very easy to fall into the trap and end up downloading software for a similar card as yours.
1) Go and get your DS card and look at the sticker on the front.

2) Try to find a URL (Internet address) See the images above for example URLS for some of the cards available at time of writing. Make sure you copy the URL EXACTLY as it appears, check and double check this

3) Type the URL into anew browser tab or window.

4) Once that has loaded find the downloads or software section and download the english kernel to your desktop.

5) If you can not find a URL on your DS card please read this to try to find out what software you need.

6) You should now have the latest and correct software kernel for your particular card saved onto your desktop. This will either be a ZIP file or a RAR file.

STEP4: Installing the kernel software to your Micro SD card

 1.  Select and copy all the unzipped files.

2. Copy the unzipped files to the microSD memory card

3. Copy your own files, including music, movies, pictures and homebrew games to the microSD memory card

4. Plug in the microSD to the flashcart. When inserting or changing carts on slot-1, switch off the DS, insert in the cart and then start the DS.
